Firefighters were called to Moorends Recreation Ground this afternoon (Friday, May 10) in response to a fire that caused damage to the changing facilities and sports pavilion. According to the Thorne Moorends Town Council, a nearby bench was set on fire, and the fire quickly spread to the building and the pavilion’s roof. It is known that the building sustained damage from the inside and the outside. The pavilion, which was renovated in 2017 at an expense over £100,000, is heavily utilized by nearby sports clubs. The damage news, according to council members, is “devastating.”
“It saddens us to confirm that Moorends Pavilion has today been subject to a suspected arson attack after a Queen Elizabeth memorial bench situated at the building entrance was set on fire,” a spokesman for Thorne Moorends Town Council stated. The building was swiftly affected by the fire. “Investigations are still underway, and the damage is significant. To safeguard the premises, we are collaborating closely with emergency services. The spokeswoman for the council continued, saying, “Club Thorne and Moorends Marauders, who work hard year-round to provide clubs and physical activities to the community, call the facility home.
