An MP for Doncaster has criticized a local town council’s intention to hike its tax precept by at least 21%. Thorne-Moorends Town Council decided to increase the amount it will get from the borough’s Council Tax, or its precept, last week. The £881,701 annual precept was approved by the council. In other words, residences in band D will pay an extra 66p in council tax each week, while properties in band A would pay an extra 44p.

Since the council does not receive funding from the federal government, the amount represents its budget for the 2024–2025 fiscal year.

The ward is represented by Don Valley MP Nick Fletcher, who criticized the decision on social media. “I feel it is not fair or right for such a draconian rise in precept, especially during a cost of living crisis,” he stated in his letter to the town council. Doncaster Council member Susan Durant, who represents the ward on the town council, responded to his remarks.

“Thorne Moorends Town Council are unique in the number of properties and public open space that they are responsible for, including cemeteries, public restrooms, parks, footbridges, etc.,” Coun. Durant stated. “This was not an easy decision by a local council.” “Increases pay for insurance, staff wages, utilities, etc. This government would be fighting the outrageous profits that corporations are earning, which make it impossible for regular people to afford to live, if it truly cared about the people who live here. “High food prices, scared working people are to turn on the heating.” The precept wouldn’t need to be hiked if parish council continued to receive government funding and there was no cost of living crisis. The budget also allots money for Thorne Park’s new play area.
