USC closed out the Big Ten’s Week 1 slate Sunday night in an instant classic. The conference newcomer carried the Big Ten flag into a showdown with the SEC and came out of the top-25 battle victorious, flashing its defensive improvement and new standout at quarterback in the process. That win over LSU, and the manner in which the Trojans beat a College Football Playoff contender, has Lincoln Riley’s program on the rise in the Big Ten power rankings through Week 1.

Penn State is another notable riser after Drew Allar shined in a new-look offense, torching West Virginia through the air in a decisive road victory. The changes at the top of the conference pecking order reshaped the league’s upper tier and threw a wrench in the championship race before Big Ten play even got underway.

Ample movement towards the bottom of the conference ladder also ensued after a Week 1 that came with plenty of surprises and that, for some teams, provided more questions than answers.
