MetService has reported that heavy rainfall and thunderstorms affected the eastern Bay of Plenty on Tuesday morning, with Whakatane experiencing 12mm of rain within a single hour.

The meteorological service indicated that the storms are progressing rapidly, with the most intense activity currently remaining offshore, and are expected to diminish by 9am.

Rainfall is anticipated to persist in the lower North Island and upper South Island as unsettled weather conditions continue.

According to MetService, residents in the eastern regions of Wellington should prepare for a damp afternoon, while the western areas are expected to experience clearer conditions.

A snowfall warning has been issued for the Lewis Pass until late Tuesday afternoon, with light rain anticipated in Marlborough and Canterbury later that evening.

Fog in Northland, Auckland, and Waikato is expected to dissipate, giving way to showers.

The western parts of the country are likely to enjoy some sunshine until Friday, although strong winds are forecasted for the West Coast, Tasman, Nelson, and the Manawatū.

The upcoming weekend appears to be predominantly wet, particularly for the North Island and upper South Island, with the possibility of heavy rainfall in certain regions.

MetService meteorologist Ngaire Wotherspoon noted that the southeasterly winds are likely contributing to the rain and cooler temperatures throughout the day.
