Rhea Seehorn, known for her role in Better Call Saul, has addressed the criticism directed at Skyler White, portrayed by Anna Gunn in Breaking Bad.While Seehorn received acclaim for her performance as Kim Wexler, Gunn’s experience during and after the five seasons of Breaking Bad was markedly different. As Walter White, played by Bryan Cranston, was positioned as the central character, Skyler’s opposition to his increasingly unethical actions led to her character and the actress facing unjust hostility from certain segments of the audience. Recently, Gunn has noted a positive shift in public perception regarding Skyler.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Seehorn commended Gunn’s interpretation of Skyler, as well as Betsy Brandt’s portrayal of Marie Schrader, Skyler’s sister. She elaborated on how their performances influenced her preparation for the role of Kim in Better Call Saul. Additionally, Seehorn shared her reflections on the intense backlash against Skyler’s character and its evolution over time. She remarked:

I became aware of that [issue] later and was truly impressed, as I believe [Anna Gunn] is exceptional. She adeptly fulfilled the demands of her role, portraying how one might genuinely react to a spouse engaging in such behavior. I aspired to meet the high standard she set … I worried about being compared to [Gunn and Betsy Brandt] and not measuring up. I was genuinely concerned that fans might not embrace characters outside the Breaking Bad family.

Historically, audiences often disfavor characters who serve as obstacles to their heroes or anti-heroes. While this can occur, it becomes problematic when it escalates to overt sexism, bullying, and abuse, as it detracts from the narrative. Therefore, I am pleased to learn that Gunn feels she is receiving a more favorable response nowadays. It is the recognition she has always deserved.
