One of the most genuine and beautiful characteristics a person can have and display is vulnerability. It is the key to being seen and therefore known. It is the path to real connection. It is courageously exposing your true self to others knowing that they may not accept you and you may be hurt. I know from personal experience that it is hard to be vulnerable – we live in a society where we spend more time protecting ourselves from being hurt than allowing ourselves to be seen. We are really skilled at building walls and wearing armor.

Through years of research on the topic, Brene Brown beautifully discusses vulnerability in her books and podcasts. I encourage you to take the time to watch one of her Ted Talks, listen to a podcast and/or read The Gifts of Imperfection and Daring Greatly. These are great first steps to learning how to come out from behind the walls or shed the armor – I also know it is ultimately worth courageously being vulnerable.
